School Supply Kits for Fall 2013
Are Now Available
Fall Supply Kits

Good news! For the 4th year in a row, we are offering parents a bulk purchasing program whereby you can buy all of your child's requested school supplies on-line.  Our vendor, Educational Products Inc., will deliver the ordered supplies to school before the start of the school year.

To get started, go to www.epipacks.com and

enter ID code PUB166.

Our teachers coordinated together on a grade-wide basis to create these supply lists.  The list of items are available on the website (click on the picture).  Please note that some of these items will be used exclusively by your child, while others like construction paper will be shared.  Also note that teachers will ask you to provide the classroom with paper towels, ziploc bags and various other products that are not a part of this bulk order.

In addition, the PTA will be purchasing additional items to be shared across each grade level.  A big thank you to the PTA for reducing the cost of these prepackaged kits.

The benefits of this program include the following:
  • A small percentage of all sales will be returned to PS166
  • The costs are comparable to retail if not better
  • On site delivery to student's desk
  • No forms nor checks will be collected, all orders are processed online
Please note: This program is optional, and items can not be purchased "a la carte".  This is a prepackaged order.

Please be sure to place your orders
by the end of this month, May 31st.

P.S. 166 Featured on EPA's "Greening the Apple" Blog

The post, titled "P.S. 166 is a Green Elementary School", lauds the green initiatives at P.S. 166. In addition to offering details describing our various programs and achievements, author Karen O'Brien continues, "Under the leadership of the Green and Wellness Committee, and with the cooperation of teachers and custodial staff, P.S. 166 has implemented environmentally sustainable practices throughout the school. Each green program is an excellent opportunity to engage students, teachers, school staff and parents, learning about recycling, pollution prevention, climate change and sustainable living. Waste reduction and recycling programs at the school include composting food, and recycling bottle caps, electronics, and textiles."

SUMMER PLAYGROUND RENOVATION!
July - September 2013

The Parks Department is slated to begin a summer playground renovation on Monday, July 8, 2013.  The renovation, which would serve to fill in the sloped area of our playground, should be completed by the first week of school!  This renovation is made possible by a very generous $600,000 grant from the offices of Scott Stringer, Manhattan Borough President and Gale Brewer, City Council Member.

to see a parent-rendered and very rough mock-up of the design ideas that were proposed by Parks on April 22nd.  There are two pages - the first page is the current design.  The second page is a mock-up with some of the design elements proposed to us by the Parks Department on April 22.  THIS IS NOT THE ACTUAL DESIGN. The actual design will be presented in early to mid-June.  Stay tuned for more information!

Click here to see a copy of the timeline that brought us from a two month playground closure due to snow in Jan/Feb 2011 to a summer 2013 renovation! (document coming!)

Join us to discuss design ideas on the following dates:
Friday, May 24 at 2pm
Wednesday, May 29 at 8:50am
Wednesday, June 5 at 8:50am
Wednesday, June 11 at 6pm (cafeteria)
Wednesday, June 19 at 2pm

Please come to at least one of our playground meetings and make sure your voice is heard.
We plan to meet in the Reading Garden, unless otherwise noted.  We'll alert the Security Officer on duty if the meeting needs to be moved for any reason.

We're calling for your comments and design ideas!  Please send them to
Maria Jonsdottir at mariamjoll@gmail.com by end of day MONDAY, MAY 27
